What are the maximum baggage measurements for Emirate and other airlines?

Every time we have to catch a plane, we must always look at the measurements of the suitcases.

It is not going to be that in the end, we have to pay for them.

Most of the time, we worry about the measurements of the cabin suitcases, but we must also consider the size of the suitcases we will check in.

In the latter, there is no limit to the dimensions of the luggage, but they also have it.

And we must not only be careful with the measurements of the suitcases, but also with their weight when packing. Finally, we must consider both the weight of the hand luggage and the weight of the suitcases that we will check in so that we do not have to pay a supplement.

It is very important to know the maximum weight, so we do not have surprises at the last minute.

Maximum measurements for hand luggage

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), the world organisation of regular airlines, wanted to set a standard size for cabin suitcases.

It is a nuisance to have to be looking at the hand luggage measurements of each airline.

The idea was that the maximum size of a cabin suitcase would be 55x35x20, but in the end, they gave up the idea because no agreement was reached with the manufacturers.

To avoid problems with hand luggage, the ideal size would be 55x35x25.

With these measures, we would be covered by the vast majority of airlines such as Ryanair, Vueling, Iberia, and all European and North American.

The only one that would not fall within these measures would be Qatar Airways, which limits hand luggage to a very low and very narrow 50x37x25.

Southwest Airlines is most flexible with the measurements of cabin suitcases, which allows a piece of luggage on a plane of 61x40x25.

All airlines allow us to carry a carry-on bag, and almost all, a second smaller piece.

This piece must not exceed the following dimensions: 35x20x20

They are briefcases, small bags or laptops.

They should be of a size that can be placed under the front seat.

Maximum weight of hand luggage

Our cabin bags’ maximum weight varies between 5 kilos for China Southern Airlines and China Airlines and 23 for British Airways.

But the average is between 8 kilos (Lufthansa, Alitalia, Tap Portugal, Swiss or Turkish Airlines) and 10 kilos (Ryanair, Vueling, Air Europa or Air Nostrum).

maximum baggage measurements to check-in

Believe it or not, the suitcases we will check in also have maximum dimensions.

Generally, airlines do not allow checked baggage that exceeds 158 centimetres by adding the dimensions (height, width and length).

An example would be a suitcase that measures 75 centimetres high, 56 long and 27 wide. In total, they add up to 158.

Who has not seen a couple at an airport changing clothes from one suitcase to another because they have gone overweight?

The luggage we will check in also has a maximum weight.

The general rule of most airlines is that checked bags cannot exceed 23 kilos. This is the case for Iberia, Vueling, Air Europa, EasyJet, Air Nostrum, Air France Lufthansa, Alitalia, Tap Portugal and all North American companies.

If we exceed this figure, we will have to pay.

Keep something very important in mind: the vast majority of airlines do not transport bags that exceed 32 kilos.
